Get To Know Me

Hi, I'm Jo! (Not "Joy", contrary to popular belief, that's just the business name!)

After graduating from Screen Academy Scotland, I moved back to Northern Ireland where I started freelancing as a photographer and filmmaker.

With my background in studying documentary, I have always been drawn to true stories - this is probably why I was drawn to shooting weddings. It helps that I'm also a hopeless romantic!

To me, whether photo or video, what I produce is like a little mini documentary of a single day in your life. It’s not just a simple recording - I put time and care and effort into creating something watchable over and over again, like your favourite movie. That’s why I called my business Familiar Joy. When I'm working, the thing I’m most drawn to is the joy of a wedding day. They don't call it the best day of your life for nothing! When the couples watch their films or look at their photos again some time later, I want them to be reminded of that joy, to the point where they experience it all over again. An emotion you've felt before, it's familiar.

"If you are looking for a talented videographer with an eye for moments as well as being completely unobtrusive and so, so lovely throughout the whole day look no further than Jo. She is an absolute gem! Cannot recommend highly enough!

pre wedding consultations

On the run up to the day I'll be here whenever you need me for any advise or questions. I'll make sure we're on the same page about everything and work with you to create a film or photo package that suits you perfectly.

an unobtrusive approach

If you hardly notice me and my team on the day, I consider that a job well done. I consider my style to be 90% documentary - I like to hang in the background and capture your day as it unfolds with no interference.

solid professional coverage

I use high quality professional equipment to ensure not only the best image but also crisp clear sound. I always have backup gear with me too.

an artistic but natural style

The only time I'll ever pose you is during the portrait session, but even then I like to keep things looking very natural. I'm all about the laughter and joy, capturing you as you are.

artistic final package delivery

My work really comes to life in the edit, and I pour my heart and soul into each final package I deliver. I always make sure I'm happy with the final result before I send it off to you.
